skremsky.tumblr.com<\/a> \u00a0<\/p>\nEven a quick glance at the set list for\u00a0Live @ The Loft\u00a0by tenor saxophonist\u00a0Michael Pedicin\u00a0will reveal that the music and legacy of John\u00a0Coltrane are foremost among his influences. With three tunes penned by Coltrane, and three closely associated with his legacy, only Joey\u00a0Calderazzo\u2019s snappy\u00a0Midnight Voyage\u00a0and Walt Weiskopf\u2019s touching\u00a0Song For My Mother\u00a0escape the Coltrane shadow. The quintet eases\u00a0into the music with a saxophone and bass introduction to\u00a0Theme For Ernie, Fred Lacey\u2019s song introduced by Coltrane and Red Garland in\u00a01958. Drummer Bob Shomo, pianist Jim Ridl and guitarist Johnnie Valentino enter around the 30-second mark to establish the loping\u00a0rhythm, and then Pedicin takes off on a fleet and dense solo that rolls on and on until Ridl steps out for a solo that echoes the\u00a0saxophonist\u2019s flurries of notes. Bassist Andy Lalasis takes over for a chorus, then Pedicin rides the tune out.<\/p>\n
